Azaria Mbatha
Rorke's Drift did not send Azaria Mbatha to Sweden. He is the only student there who received the scholarship from the school of Art in Stockholm in 1965 after his exhibition at the same school of art. Rector Hult from (Konstfack School of Art and Design) came to Rorke's Drift to announce the news of the scholarship to Azaria. after that they were no students leaving Rorke's Drift, to private or official organisations. Peder and Ulla Gowenius left for Lesotho and new teachers came to rorke's Drift. They came from different parts of Europe, while Azaria was still in Sweden. He came to Rorke's Drift as a teacher about the end of 1967 and he left with his family in 1969.
The correct information on how Azaria came to Sweden ca be received from the school of art in Stockholm (Konst Fack Skolan).
Unfortunately, some people write biographies about other individuals without even searching and investigation of what may be closer to the truth. 'What is the truth?' I do not know but at least. We cab try to reach it. One can do a qualitive analysis of the material by comparing investigations, compare already written material with available documentationand interpret investigations as reconstructions of the past, not as statements of facts. However, most of us come forward with what we argue as nothing but the truth.
They sent the rest of the students to Sweden (all female) to different parts of the country,to private organisations and weaving schools for short periods most of the time connected with exhibitions from the school (tapestries). Azaria Mbatha was the only male student at the time sinde 1962 from Mapumulo where the art school had started. All other male students studying fine art came to Rorke's Drift in 1967.
We understand that the history of Rorke's Drift is today part of trade mark applicatin connected with the name Azaria Mbatha. Take away Azaria Mbatha write about Rorke's Drift. We always read about Azaria Mbatha and the artists male there. They studied there at different periods. Are all in as real famous Artists because they had studied at Rorke's Drift? Before this school, people in SA had not seen any drawing done by a black person. Nevertheless, Azaria did not study with them and he does not know most of them he started in 1962 as a solo student & artist among female students who were preparing to go out to hospitals as therapists...(The only similarities,Azaria and others, they are South African Blacks, treated as group and they happened to have visited Rorke's Drift at some point) Muafengo John met Azaria at Rorke's Drift as a student and he was a Namibian.
